We would now like to ask you a few questions about your political views. Regardless of whether you are interested in politics or not, please read each paragraph below and answer the question at the end of it.

1) Some people don't pay much attention to politics. How about you? Would you say that you are VERY MUCH interested, SOMEWHAT interested or NOT MUCH interested in politics?

VERY MUCH interested
SOMEWHAT interested
NOT MUCH interested

2) Here is a seven-point scale on which the political views that people might hold are arranged from extremely liberal to extremely conservative. Where would you place yourself on this scale?

Extremely Liberal
Liberal
Slightly Liberal
Moderate; Middle of the road
Slightly Conservative
Conservative
Extremely Conservative

3) There has been some discussion about abortion during recent years. Which one of the opinions below best agrees with your view?

By law, abortion should never be permitted. The law should permit abortion only in cases of rape, incest, or when the woman's life is in danger. The law should permit abortion for reasons other than rape, incest, or danger to the woman's life, but only after the need for the abortion has been clearly established. By law, a woman should always be able to obtain an abortion as a matter of personal choice.

4) Should same-sex couples be allowed to marry, or do you think they should not be allowed to marry?

Should be allowed Should NOT be allowed Should not be allowed to marry but should be allowed to legally form a civil union

5) Some people think the government should provide fewer services even in areas such as health and education in order to reduce spending. Suppose these people are at one end of a scale, at point 1. Other people feel it is important for the government to provide many more services even if it means an increase in spending. Suppose these people are at the other end, at point 7. And, of course, some other people have opinions somewhere in between. Where would you place yourself on this scale?

Far fewer services
Fewer services
Slightly fewer services
About the same level of services
Slightly more services
More services

6) There is talk these days about whether the American government should continue giving money to agricultural corporations. Many conservatives argue that the government should stop giving money to agricultural corporations because the policy costs people in taxes, largely benefits a small group of wealthy people, and keeps poor agricultural countries from developing. Many liberals argue that the government should continue giving money to agricultural corporations to keep America self-sufficient in food production, to keep the cost of food low for Americans, and to keep farmers from losing their jobs. Where do you stand on this issue?

Give much less money to agricultural corporations
Give less money to agricultural corporations
Give slightly less money to agricultural corporations
Continue giving the same amount of money to agricultural corporations
Give slightly more money to agricultural corporations Give more money to agricultural corporations Give much more money to agricultural corporations

7) There is much concern about the rapid rise in medical and hospital costs. Some people feel there should be a government insurance plan which would cover all medical and hospital expenses for everyone. Suppose these people are at one end of a scale, at point 1. Others feel that all medical expenses should be paid by individuals through private insurance plans like Blue Cross or other company paid plans. Suppose these people are at the other end, at point 7. And, of course, some other people have opinions somewhere in between. Where would you place yourself on this scale?

Strongly favor government insurance
Favor government insurance
Slightly favor government insurance
In the middle on this issue
Slightly favor private insurance Favor private insurance Strongly favor private insurance

8) Some people believe that we should spend much less money for defense. Suppose these people are at one end of a scale, at point 1. Others feel that defense spending should be greatly increased. Suppose these people are at the other end, at point 7. And, of course, some other people have opinions somewhere in between. Where would you place yourself on this scale?

Slightly decrease defense spending
Neither increase nor decrease defense spending
Slightly increase defense spending Increase defense spending Greatly increase defense spending

9) Some people believe the United States should solve international problems by using diplomacy and other forms of international pressure and use military force only if absolutely necessary. Suppose we put such people at "1" on this scale. Others believe diplomacy and pressure often fail and the US must be ready to use military force. Suppose we put them at number 7. And of course others fall in positions in-between. Where would you place yourself on this scale?

Strongly favor diplomacy
Favor diplomacy
Slightly favor diplomacy
In the middle on this issue
Slightly favor readiness to use military force Favor readiness to use military force Strongly favor readiness to use military force

10) There is talk these days about whether the American government should begin to make universities pay taxes on their investment income. A liberal argument has been proposed recently that universities SHOULD have to pay taxes on their investment income because the current policy gives an advantage to a small group of elites at the most prestigious universities. Conservative arguments counter that universities SHOULD NOT have to pay such taxes because they do a public good by educating people and carrying out research. Where do you stand on this issue?

Strongly support universities having to pay taxes
Support universities having to pay taxes
Slightly support universities having to pay taxes
In the middle on this issue
Slightly oppose universities having to pay taxes Oppose universities having to pay taxes Strongly oppose universities having to pay taxes
